Professorship Macroeconomics

We would like to warmly welcome you to our homepage. We are part of the Faculty of Economics and deal with the subject of macroeconomics in research and teaching, i.e. the entirety of the economy and the interaction of its sectors.

In contrast to microeconomics or the various departments of business administration, which analyze selected sectors in isolation, we rely on these results and try to embed them in the comprehensive context of the economy as a whole.

Research

Our research focuses on labor market theory, spatial economics and the analysis of capital market frictions. Of particular interest are employment, growth and distribution problems and the resulting questions on frictional labor markets, optimal taxation over the economic cycle and the selection and implementation of economic policy measures.

The model-theoretical foundation of our analysis are, among other things, dynamic, non-linear stochastic equilibrium models. Supplemented by targeted frictions and heterogeneity, these can then be used to approximate real economic circumstances. Estimates of model parameters and counterfactual simulations are then used for the empirical evaluation of our models.

For applied research, we use common programming languages such as Matlab, Julia, R, Stata, Python, Fortran or Dynare. In combination with our customized workstations and our own nodes in the HPC server cluster LiDO3 at TU Dortmund University, we can, for example, solve extensive models with heterogeneous agents, carry out Monte Carlo simulations or use very large data sets for econometric estimates. Teaching

As part of our teaching activities, we offer you the courses outlined below for your studies at the TU Dortmund University.

For your bachelor's degree, we offer you an introduction to economic theory with the course Macroeconomics. Under the module's title Economic Theory II, the course is often a compulsory part of degrees related at least partially to economics.

In addition, you can take in-depth courses in your bachelor's degree, e.g. on growth and foreign trade theory, or on employment and labor market theory. Here we teach you more complex mechanisms such as friction, heterogeneity or endogenous growth components and embed them in the already known model environments.

Finally, you can take our advanced specialization courses for your Master's degree. In these you will deal with research-related state-of-the-art models for macroeconomic analysis. The courses Dynamic Fiscal Policy and Dynamic Macroeconomics are particularly noteworthy.

In addition to theoretical knowledge, the latter also provides technical skills for solving and simulating macroeconomic models using numerical methods. The event is also a mandatory part of the graduate education at the Ruhr Graduate School of Economics.

Throughout the semester, we also offer to support you with seminar papers and theses at our professorship.

For a complete overview and detailed information on our range of courses in the summer and winter semesters, as well as on theses, please select the tab Teaching in the navigation tabs.
